The Toronto-based company said it had net income of 64 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 91 cents per share.
The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 82 cents per share.
The financial services company posted revenue of $10.96 billion in the period.
Sun Life shares have declined 11% since the beginning of the year. The stock has increased nearly 4% in the last 12 months.
