CALGARY, Alberta (AP) _ Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) on Wednesday reported a third-quarter loss of $9 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

The Calgary, Alberta-based company said it had a loss of 1 cent per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 15 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 7 cents per share.

The energy company posted revenue of $4.85 billion in the period, missing Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $5.1 billion.

Suncor Energy shares have dropped 66% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $11.28, a drop of 63% in the last 12 months.
