SCA has expanded the Sörgraninge Conservation Park in Ångermanland to include the Hornsjömon and Hornsjöbäcken valley. The new area encompasses 670 hectares, of which 455 hectares are to be managed in a manner that preserves or develops conservation values. The entire park is now 3,147 hectares.

Sörgraninge Conservation Park is situated in south-west Ångermanland, south of the Graninge Lake along Road 331. The park was opened in 2014 and SCA has since carried out a number of measures, such as prescribed fires and wetlands restoration. Several paths have also been created for visitors, the latest addition is a pleasant children's trail on the Sakrisberget mountain where the cartoon characters Kolle and Mila explain about the forest.

High values

Another 670 hectares has now been added to the park. The new area begins by the southern end of the existing park, near the Bastusjön Lake and stretches across to Villola. The area is of particular interest for its high geological values and biodiversity, and is also rich in ancient and cultural remains.

'It was only natural to expand the park to include this section given that the entire area has the same geological conditions. The soil is made up of sediment layers from the outflow of a subglacial stream caused by the melting ice sheet,' says Mikael Berg, who is a nature conservation expert and the person responsible for the park.

'The conservation park is situated in a high-value conservation landscape as designated by the county administrative board and is linked together with five nature reserves. It is important to keep the whole area together. This helps us to favor species that require large conjoined forests to thrive.'

Prereservation and development

455 hectares of the forest land will be managed to promote the preservation and development of nature conservation values, while 215 hectares will be managed as productive forestland.

'The area includes forest environments that have evolved after repeated natural disturbances and tracts that are unspoiled with long-term forest continuity. SCA has already carried out some prescribed fires here, and more are planned,' says Mikael and adds:
'We are taking even more of a comprehensive approach in our pursuit of preserving and developing conservation values. The area has plenty of ancient remains that we will take due care of and we will also develop social values, such as outdoor activities and fishing.'

The new area contains easy hiking paths, but these are not marked on the ground. They are, however, marked in map apps, such as Min karta and Naturkartan.
'We hope more people will discover Sörgraninge and the beautiful nature here,' concludes Mikael.
