Sysmex Corporation (HQ: Kobe, Japan; Chairman and CEO: Hisashi Ietsugu) has set "Carbon Neutral Targets" to realize zero greenhouse gas emissions in real terms by 2040 in order to respond to climate change, which is having a profound effect on the global environment. Sysmex will strengthen its efforts to become carbon neutral to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

Various initiatives are being accelerated on a global scale to respond to climate change. At the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) held in Glasgow, England in 2021, an outcome document was adopted that stated efforts would be pursued to limit the rise of global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Out of our sincere wish to build trust and confidence among all our stakeholders through the practice of the Sysmex Way (the corporate philosophy of the Sysmex Group), Sysmex aims to resolve various issues and problems that impact our society today, while at the same time working to contribute to the development of healthcare and healthy human lives. Regarding one of those issues, "Environmental Consideration", we have formulated our long-term environmental vision of "Sysmex Eco-Vision 2025", to run until March 31, 2026 to realize this initiative, and for which we have been promoting various efforts. Of the greenhouse gases, CO2 is the one that has the most significant impact. With regard to CO2, Sysmex has set goals1 of a 15 percent reduction of CO2 emissions when using instruments, a 50 percent reduction in business activities, and a 15 percent reduction when shipping. Furthermore, in January 2021, Sysmex expressed its support for the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD),2 and we are carrying out efforts to evaluate and manage our climate-related risks and opportunities, as well as to provide robust disclosures based on the TCFD's provided framework.
At this time, we have set "Carbon Neutral Targets" with the aim of achieving zero emissions of greenhouse gases in real terms from the offices of the entire Sysmex Group3 by 2040. Setting these new targets is in response to demands for solutions to global social issues related to climate change, and declares our commitment to accelerate more than ever before our initiatives for environmental conservation.
Going forward, we will continue to promote optimization of our operations and energy-saving measures, and for the electricity used at Sysmex's business offices, carry out a phased transition to electricity that is renewable energy based,4 as well as proceed with initiatives for reducing greenhouse gases, with the aim of realizing carbon neutrality. Moreover, we will set targets based on SBT (Science Based Targets)5 and accelerate our efforts to achieve them.
In order to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, Sysmex will unite as one to ensure we carry out initiatives to respond to climate change, and without fail achieve "Carbon Neutral Targets".
Terminology
1 The per-unit target, taking fiscal 2016 as the base year
2 Established by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) by request of the G20, the TCFD is an industry-led task force dedicated to promoting and improving corporate climate-related financial disclosure.
3 Applies to Scope 1 emissions, which are direct emissions of greenhouse gases from the consumption of fuel that the company owns or controls; and Scope 2 emissions, which are indirect emissions of greenhouse gases from the consumption of electricity and heat purchased by the company
4 Excludes small-scale bases, such as rental properties of sales bases
5 Targets for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions based on scientific evidence and aligned with the levels set forth in the Paris Agreement
