OTTAWA--Canada's merchandise-trade surplus with the rest of the world widened in October as exports were buoyed by consumer goods and farm products and there were offsetting movements in imports for the month.

The country posted a goods-trade surplus of 1.21 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about $893.4 million, Statistics Canada said Tuesday. The consensus expectation was for a C$890 million surplus, according to economists at TD Securities.

Exports climbed 1.5% to C$67.04 billion in October from the month before, while imports were up 0.6% to C$65.82 billion, the data agency said.
