OTTAWA--Employment in Canada edged higher in November, while the jobless rate ticked down for the month back toward record lows seen over the summer.

Statistics Canada reported Friday that Canada's economy added a net 10,100 jobs in November, following a larger gain of 108,300 the month before. Market expectations were for a gain of 10,000 jobs for the month, according to economists at TD Securities.

The unemployment rate in November fell slightly at 5.1%. Expectations were for the jobless rate to rise 0.1 percentage point from October to 5.3%.

When calculated using U.S. Labor Department methodology, Canada's unemployment rate in November slipped 0.1 percentage point to 4.0%.
