Tata Steel, as in previous years, kicked off the 31 st Road Safety Week 2020 (January 11-17, 2020) celebrations across all its operating units.

Road Safety Week (RSW) is observed under the aegis of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Govt. of India every year. The National Safety Council supplements the Government's initiative by promoting Road Safety Campaigns across the country.

At Tata Steel, decentralized inauguration during the week at each department across the locations is being done. It will consist of mass meetings and roll out speech by HOD on importance of road safety with a commitment to Zero harm on road.

Following the plan, Safety Department also launched the Road Safety Week programme at departmental level on January 10.

The programme consisted of a welcome address, details of road safety statistics inside TSJ and information on plan of activities planned during the week by Mr. Amitabh Singh, Head, Safety, Road & Rail followed by Nukkad-Natak on Road Safety and on the spot quiz.

This was followed by address by Mr. Nitesh Raj, Assistant. Secretary Tata Workers Union who urged employees to take part in the events planned during the week.

Mr. Dinkar Ananda, Chief of Spares & Services & Alternate Chairman, Apex Road & Rail Sub - Committee addressed the gathering and mentioned about the initiatives being taken by Tata Steel to improve Road Safety.

Some key activities planned for the week are: Special walk by Apex Road & Rail sub-committee members on various road stretches and rail network

Nukkad Natak on road safety theme near canteens and other common places

'Heavy Vehicle Check at Door Steps ' - Inspection of Heavy at Department by central road safety along with EQMS personnel

Interaction Session of HV drivers and Mobile Crane Operators with Sectional Head/ HOD referring fatigue hazard and high potential incidents in 2019

On line intranet Quiz on road safety for employees ( 15th ,16th and 17th Jan'20)

Engagement of Vendor Partners and other Stakeholder through:

Road Safety Awareness programme , Health check-up for Drivers in Transport Park and JMD Parking, different parking area at other locations

Training program for Heavy Vehicle Drivers in departments by engaging in-house experts

Self-Fitness inspection of all buses and heavy vehicles deployed by taking help of Safety inspection team

Communication to keep Number plate visible in the vehicles on road

Poster competition among contractor employees

Road Safety initiatives by contract supervisor at their Work place domain

On the spot road safety quiz and recognition among contractor employees at working site

Finding of blind spots on road and removal of extra vegetation by engaging right Agency

Ensuring Reflective tape on commercial vehicles for better visibility in night

Individual Commitment for Zero Speed violation across the departments

Engaging team for safe driving counselling in city /Town in tandem with JUSCO and various schools

Identify good Samaritan and their recognition

PATH (Peoples Association For Theatre) team performed a Nukkad Natak (Safety Skit) highlighting the road safety issues and incidents due to mobile phone usage while driving, Fatigue at night, Heavy vehicle safety, obeying traffic rules and safety behaviour. The team will perform Nukkad Natak across the Steel Works, all through the week.

Road Safety Week is being observed across all out locations and Divisions of Tata Steel. During the week, various activities are planned to make employees aware of the Road Safety concerns and reinforce Safe behaviour. Exemplary performances of will be recognized from amongst employees, contractors and vendor partners will be recognised and awarded.

Mr. Santosh Kumar Singh, Union Committee Member TWU, proposed vote of thanks, emphasising the need for proactive safety communication.
