TECO Mitsui Corporation (TEMICO), a motor joint venture in India, kicked off operations today (Nov. 29), with TECO holding more than 50% of the shares. TECO and Mitsui & Co. agree that TECO will undertake e-vehicle powertrain manufacturing, as well as the production and sales of high-efficiency industrial motors, while Mitsui spearheads India's domestic e-vehicle market. J. George Lien, P.E., TEMICO director overseeing the project, noted that while TEMICO, TECO's fifth production base worldwide, will focus on tapping the Indian market, it may expand its reach to other East Asian and even African markets in the future, conforming to the global short supply-chain and local production trend.

TEMICO's factory is situated in the Aero Space Industrial Park in Bengaluru, known as India's Silicon Valley and the nation's third-largest city. It occupies 18,500 square meters of space, less than two kilometers south of an international airport, and was developed by Century Development Corp., a TECO affiliate. TEMICO's plant is constructed with automated smart production lines, including automated electrotechnical equipment, solvent-free varnish equipment, and automated paint-spraying/drying equipment. Theodore Huang, TECO Group chairman and TEMICO chairman, who is very familiar with the Indian market, pointed out that strenuous efforts were made to develop capabilities for key manufacturing processes for the sustainable sake of energy conservation and emission reduction.

The facility is TECO's second newly operated high-efficiency motor plant worldwide, following the high-efficiency low-voltage motor factory in Mexico, inaugurated in Sept. With the same 'short-supply chain' concept implemented in North America, Sophia Chiu, TECO chairman, highlighted that TEMICO takes advantage of an Indian localized supply chain and TECO's longstanding experience in the Indian market. Chiu emphasized that TECO is joining hands with a strong business partner, Mitsui & Co., to make a large-scale expansion in India, embodying the production/marketing mode of a 'local sales network and regional production base. Lien also pointed out that in the future, at the new TEMICO factory, the main production will focus on industrial super-efficient low-voltage motors and electric vehicle power modules. Negotiations for the sales of industrial motors are already underway with several large OEM customers. Additionally, ongoing discussions are taking place for the sales of electric vehicle powertrains with two major Indian companies.

For years, TECO has aggressively tapped into the Indian market and accumulated significant experience, establishing an Indian marketing and production team since 2008. Another TEMICO shareholder, Mitsui & Co. LTD., has built a sprawling operating network since entering the Indian market in the 1950s. This network covers various industries, including steelmaking, power facilities, chemical engineering logistics, motorcycles, sanitary ware, medicine and healthcare, pharmaceuticals, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and TV shopping, with the business footprint extending to New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad.
