Telekom Slovenije donates €20,000 to help seniors living alone

Telekom Slovenije gave its end-of-the-year donation in the amount of €20,000 to four humanitarian organizations easing loneliness and providing support to seniors who live alone. These humanitarian organizations - Slovenian Philanthropy, Humanitarček, Sopotniki and Zlata mreža - help seniors across Slovenia, and in the current times of limited social contact, those living alone are especially vulnerable.

This year we are all extra aware of the importance of interpersonal relationships, even more than before, while loneliness among the elderly has become even more emphatic. Seniors who live by themselves require assistance in everyday chores, transportation and visiting the doctor, as well as genuine human contact, a conversation, and the time afforded by volunteers who visit them at their home. 'That is why our end-of-the-year donation goes to the humanitarian organizations and volunteers, who make sure that even in this year full of uncertainties and trials, we remain connected as a society every day. The feeling that you are not alone is also an important part of the holidays, and selfless volunteers make sure that connectedness is not just a word, but also a feeling of solidarity, closeness and warmth,' emphasized Tomaž Seljak, President of the Management Board of Telekom Slovenije.

'Slovenian Philanthropy helps the elderly in need as part of our Volunteer service, which operates in all of our eight offices across Slovenia. The seniors who need various kinds of assistance are connected with volunteers, and we coordinate companionship, help after recovery from hospital treatment, help with urgent tasks, and similar. If needed, we also include them in our Surplus Food programme, and provide them with high-quality foods that are left over at restaurants and stores. The funds we received will be very useful for covering the cost of delivery and food containers, other transportation and the cost of volunteers,' said Tereza Novak, Executive Director of Slovenian Philanthropy.

'With this donation we will be able to provide our senior users with food and heating. The epidemic has left many without a warm meal, as public transport no longer operates, nor do the inns, where they could purchase a warm lunch. We are glad that Telekom Slovenije is aware of the importance of warm meals and especially home delivery, which can be costly, since we cover whole Slovenia, and they decided to help us,' said Ninna Kozorog, the president of the Humanitarček association.

'Our 'cotravellers' provide free transportation to those aged 65 and above in 15 Slovenian municipalities, especially to those people who live in rural areas, bringing mobility into their lives for greater inclusion, an active social life, and a higher quality of living. Telekom Slovenije's donation will allow us to bolster our activities in this period, marked by the Covid-19 epidemic. We now also provide the seniors with the delivery of medication, food parcels and warm meals, assist civil protection teams, and are developing new solutions for 2021 to significantly increase the quality of living of the elderly. A sincere thank you for your support,' said Janja Smrkolj from Sopotniki.

'At the Zlata mreža institute we strive to improve the quality of living of seniors and those in need, and we are immensely happy about the donation that Telekom Slovenije gave us for our Prostofer project. We will put the funds towards an even more intensive expansion of our project, as we want each and every elderly person in Slovenia to have the possibility of free transportation when they need it. We will also boost our training for driving e-vehicles that are used for these free rides, as for most of our volunteers this is the first encounter with them. Improved mobility, greater social inclusion, more mutual interconnection - these are the goals that we pursue - now also with the help of Telekom Slovenije, so sincerely thank you,' said Miha Bogataj, the director of the Zlata mreža institute.

This year, evidently marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, Telekom Slovenije made donations to the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, University Medical Centre Maribor, and the Postojna Maternity Hospital, provided residents of retirement homes with mobile phones and free video calling, and provided young people from socially disadvantaged families with free modems and free mobile internet. As the leading Slovenian operator, the company is actively giving back to the society it operates in throughout the year. As a donor the company actively helps several humanitarian organizations, projects, and individuals in need, and in the scope of its socially responsible activities also lends support to educational, cultural, and sports organizations and events.
