TELUS Corp. on Friday reported better-than-expected rise in profit as revenue growth benefited from customer additions in the third quarter.

The Canadian national telecommunications company reported net income of 551 million Canadian dollars (US$400.8 million), or C$0.37 a share, up from C$358 million, or C$0.25 a share a year ago.

Adjusted earnings were C$0.34 a share, eating consensus expectations among analysts polled on FactSet of C$0.32 a share.

Operating revenues also rose, reaching C$4.64 billion from C$4.25 billion, just shy of expectations of C$4.67 billion.

TELUS said that it has added 150,000 new mobile-phone customers in the period, which was a 15,000 increase over the prior year and their best quarterly results in more than ten years.

Wireline also had a boost, adding 73,000 new customers.
