Tenaga Nasional Bhd. is investing 21 billion ringgit (US$4.61 billion) in a power grid program to boost its transmission and distribution network capability and reliability.

"On a regional level, we are proactively identifying transmission grid locations that will improve market integration and we will work closely with local authorities to develop these," said Tenaga Nasional Chief Executive Baharin Din in a statement Wednesday.

The Malaysian electric utility has allocated the investment into its Grid of the Future program, aimed at accelerating the country's energy transition and cutting emissions intensity to net zero, for the period between 2022 and 2024.

Mr. Baharin also urged power utility companies in Association of Southeast Asian Nations member countries to speed up collaboration to achieve an interconnected power grid in support of the region's collective goal of reaching net zero.
