Tenaga Nasional Bhd. and Sedania Innovator Bhd. are partnering to evaluate the potential of harnessing energy from excess water in dams and water reservoirs across Malaysia.

Sedania Technologies, Sedania Innovator's sustainable-energy arm, will deploy energy-efficient microhydropower turbines developed by Tenaga subsidiary TNB Research to generate electricity from released water at dams, according to a joint statement on Sunday.

Each microhydropower turbine can generate up to 305,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. The estimated energy generation from TNB Research's 70 water dams and reservoirs could be enough to provide carbon-free electricity to about 10,000 homes, the companies said.

The first project under the partnership is a dam project in Kota Tinggi, Johor.
