KETSA MINISTER BEHIND TNB IN PLANS TO ACCELERATE MALAYSIA'S ENERGY TRANSITION

New Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan conducted a working visit to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on Tuesday and expressed his willingness to support the utility's leadership in fulfilling its responsibility towards the rakyat and country.

The commitment is timely as TNB is in a negotiation with the Energy Commission (EC) to finalise the Regulatory Period 3 (RP3) under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) mechanism which will be implemented next year.

"I am proud and satisfied with the briefing on its future plans to me. We appreciate the huge contribution by the energy sector towards the benefit of the rakyat," he said during his first working visit to TNB Headquarters in Bangsar.

Earlier in the visit, Takiyuddin was given a briefing by TNB Presiden/Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir. Baharin Din regarding its performance, contributions and the challenges faced. Takiyuddin was also briefed on the RP3 by Chief Regulatory & Stakeholder Management Officer, Datuk Wira Roslan Ab Rahman.

The three-year RP3 period is scheduled to start on 1 January 2022 following the expiry of RP2 which was extended until 31 December 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The implementation of RP3 is expected to enable TNB to enhance its role in the National Recovery Plan including aspects of tariff review and capital expenditure for the next three years, in line with the country's energy transition.

Takiyuddin who regarded TNB as the nation's heart in the energy industry, gave his assurance to support TNB in an effort to find the best solution to balance the industry's demands and fulfilling its responsibility towards the rakyat and nation.

"TNB has a huge social responsibility to give the best services to the people. But at the same time, TNB has to be able to balance certain planning aspects to ensure that they can fulfil the industry's requirement and continue helping the rakyat.

"I am committed to ensure this balance. I will give my support to TNB's leadership to find the best solution in balancing the responsibilities," he said.

During the visit which lasted for more than three hours, Takiyuddin was also briefed on the grid operation system and the 24-hour monitoring of reliable electricity supply to more than 9 million customers in Peninsular Malaysia.

Baharin in his speech said TNB has evolved from an agency providing essential service which is electricity, into an agency that is powering the nation's development with the potential to spur the economy.

"During the pandemic, TNB has assisted the Government in providing electricity bill discount totalling RM313 million for 2020 and 2021 for the rakyat, apart from supporting various other initiatives such as Bakul Prihatin Negara programme (RM2 million)," he said.

He added that TNB is proud to serve the rakyat and nation through its social responsibility activities, vendor development programmes and other initiatives totalling RM12 billion from January 2018 to 31 August 2021.

He added that TNB also came up with its own initiative to help people economically affected by the pandemic through Tabung Warga TNB Prihatin which raised almost RM3.3 million that has helped 5,729 recipients thus far.
