Tenaris has published a number of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) stating the environmental performance of its main products based on their Life Cycle Assessment. The EPDs measure the impact of steel pipe on air emissions, energy use, climate change, the recovery of co-products and water use.

'EPDs represent an important achievement, which confirm Tenaris's commitment not only to minimizing the environmental impact of its operations through the adoption of the best available technologies, but also to promote long-term sustainability of its business and to disclose its environmental performance,' said Carolina Bengochea, Tenaris Environment Senior Director.

Tenaris issued its first EPD in 2015 for the Dalmine mill in Italy to measure the environmental impact of one ton of pipe from a lifecycle perspective. This was the first time a certified EPD had been issued in the International EPD System for steel pipes specifically designed for the oil & gas industry. Another milestone - first of its kind in the industry - was reached in 2017, when the EPD was issued for seamless OCTG pipes.

The latest OCTG EPD, calculated for an average ton of seamless OCTG pipe from Dalmine, Siderca, Silcotub and Tamsa, shows that the product's Global Warming Potential indicator improved by 7% compared with the previous year's score. These metrics, and those of two other EPDs for line pipe and steel structural solutions, show that over 60% of the company's GHG emissions are from upstream processes, and 30% from pipe manufacturing, while transportation only has a limited impact on the overall total.

'This information serves to steer our main actions towards improving the consumption and type of raw materials we use and achieving efficiency in the steelmaking process and the disclosure of the environmental performance of our products to our stakeholders', added Bengochea.
