Tenaris representatives in the US hosted presentations and presented two papers during the first Unconventional Resources Technology Conference (URTeC) online conference.
Members of Tenaris's Technical Sales team shared information about product selection and use of casing connections, and also discussed the challenges from fracturing and its effects on reservoirs.
On Monday, July 20, during the seminar titled Collaborative development of a production casing connection for well design in the Permian Basin, Tenaris Technical Sales Senior Engineer Lee Pereira detailed the method used by Tenaris for the development of its threaded and coupled solution for slim wells, TenarisHydril Wedge 441™.
The presentation was divided into two sections: the first covered the development of the Wedge 441™ connection based on field needs and which included restricted clearance as a main driver, and the second portion focused on the comprehensive testing and analysis conducted prior to its field deployment.
'Tenaris's approach and method to develop the connection considered its structural and sealability performance, dimensional effects during running and cementing, as well as its validation for field use through a rig demonstration and field trials,' Pereira explained.
The development of Wedge 441™ was a collaboration between Tenaris and a large independent operator in the Permian, resulting in a cost-efficient connection solution with the benefits of high torque and increased make-up efficiency.
On Tuesday, July 21, Adonis Ichim, Tenaris Technical Sales Senior Engineer, presented on Maximizing reliability - Well integrity statistics and risk reduction strategies.
Attendees learned more in-depth about mitigating well integrity and well accessibility issues in shale plays through data and solutions gathered over the past decade.
'This approach delivers important lessons on how to select tubular goods and materials, design the installation, or even operate the well in order to diminish the failure risk,' said Ichim.
The seminar included a comprehensive review of 150 cases of multi-fractured horizontal well failures, together with mitigation strategies. The cases were analyzed and grouped in ten different categories, resulting in conclusions for the three main well stages: string installation, stimulation, and production.
The analysis allowed Tenaris to estimate the failure occurrence per stage, to determine its cause, and understand the inherent failure risk for the different phases of a well's life cycle.
'This was the first year the URTeC took place online, so it was a totally different experience, but very engaging and productive nevertheless,' said Ichim.
