DALLAS (AP) _ Tenet Healthcare Corp. (THC) on Tuesday reported a loss of $196 million in its third quarter.

The Dallas-based company said it had a loss of $1.86 per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 64 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 33 cents per share.

The hospital operator posted revenue of $4.56 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Eight analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $4.35 billion.

Tenet shares have decreased 25% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen roughly 7%. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $28.57, a rise of 17% in the last 12 months.
