Tenet Healthcare Corporation : Tenet Hospitals Awarded 173 Cigna Center of Excellence Designations

01/09/2013 | 01:05pm EST

Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE: THC) announced today that Cigna (NYSE:CI) has awarded Tenet hospitals 173 Center of Excellence (COE) designations. This compares to the 71 designations that Tenet's hospitals received in 2011.

"We are very pleased that Cigna has recognized our hospitals' strong commitment to quality as evidenced by the number of Center of Excellence designations our hospitals earned this year," said Kelvin A. Baggett, M.D., Tenet's Chief Medical Officer. "We commend Cigna for their commitment to these measures, which enable customers to identify hospitals and facilities that deliver the highest quality of care. We know that our patients have a choice when it comes to their healthcare, and we are proud that these designations represent the superior care and outstanding patient experience they can expect from our hospitals."

Cigna updated and expanded its designation methodology for 2013 and has evaluated and recognized hospitals with positive patient outcomes and high cost-efficiency measures with its COE program. In addition, Cigna has enhanced quality designations to indicate superior patient outcomes based on treatment effectiveness for 31 different surgical procedures and medical conditions. The patient outcomes data use hospitals' Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare measures, Leapfrog Patient Safety Measures, mortality and complication rates in addition to other evidence-based protocol metrics.

"Cigna commends Tenet for its continued efforts to improve clinical quality and patient outcomes," said Dick Salmon, M.D., Cigna's national medical director for performance measurement and improvement. "Tenet's large number of Center of Excellence designations provides substantial choice for Cigna customers and is a recognition of Tenet's commitment to quality."
