EXPO DUBAI: TERNA PRESENTS DRIVING ENERGY, A WORK OF ART

The installation represents the three strategic drivers for the group lead by Stefano

Donnarumma: Sustainability, Innovation and Digitalisation

Rome, 4 October 2021 - Today at Expo 2020 Dubai, Terna - the largest independent electricity transmission grid operator in Europe - presented the artwork Driving Energy inside the Italy Pavilion "Beauty connects people".

The presentation took place on the sidelines of the From Milan to Glasgow: Energy Transition for Climate Action event, organised by the Italy's Commissioner General for Expo 2020 Dubai. Terna participated in the event with Giacomo Donnini, Head of Large Projects and International Development, which focused on the energy transition as a driving force for the country's economic growth, the environmental benefits resulting from the new projects Terna has planned and the role of Italy internationally, especially in the Mediterranean, due to its geographic location.

Terna's Driving Energy installation at Expo 2020 Dubai was created by artist Marianna Masciolini with sustainable materials and recycled pieces from the electricity grid. More than 60 metres long, the piece represents the electricity transport system as a backbone that, via the grid, carries energy across the country. Driving Energy interprets the pillars guiding Terna's actions as an energy transition director and enabler in Italy as three artistic aspects: Sustainability, Innovation and Digitalisation.

"Sustainability isn't a passing fad, it is the North Star that must guide us all. In fact, the ecosystems on which our society, our safety and our well-being are built, are in danger. This is a situation that requires a radical course correction, to make our way of life and production methods sustainable - this means making the transformation pleasant and at the same time safe for the nearly 8 billion people who populate the planet, for their children and for their children's children. This is the challenge of sustainability and of the ecological transition. This is why Terna has embarked on a business and investment path that will lead to profound change in the energy system with the goal of decarbonisation and the development of renewable sources.", stated Valentina Bosetti, Terna's Chairwoman.

Sustainability is represented by a mirror that reflects the image of the observer, becoming an instrument of conscience and responsibility. For Terna, sustainability is a strategic and business driver. Based on European Taxonomy criteria, 95% of the approximately €9 billion in investments called for in the 2021-2025 "Driving Energy" Business Plan are sustainable in nature and aimed at integrating non-programmable renewable sources and increasing the security and resilience of the electricity system.

Innovation and Digitalisation are symbolised by lights and the movement of light and dark blue pigments, like the Italian sky, which create a web of lines that represent the electricity grid. Digitalisation and Innovation are two of the pillars upon which Terna has built its pathway to growth. In fact, the Business Plan calls for over €900 million for innovation and digitalisation. In the coming years, new technologies will gradually play an increasingly central role, aiming to support the energy transition and continue to improve the resilience of the electricity system.

Terna's presence at Expo 2020 Dubai confirms its central role as a director of the Italian energy system and European hub for achieving the objectives of the energy transition. At the Italy Pavilion, Terna is showing the new technologies, innovations and skills that will become increasingly essential in achieving the decarbonisation objectives for Italy and Europe.
