The Italian electricity grid operator reaffirms its role as director and enabler of the energy transition

towards a decarbonised and sustainable system

TERNA, 37 GRID DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, EQUAL TO OVER

€1 BILLION INVESTMENTS, WERE APPROVED IN 2021

This is the highest investment figure in Terna's history: investments almost quadrupled compared

to 2020 when the approval of projects valued at a total of €266 million

Significant benefits also for the environment and local communities: 60% of the new works will be

'invisible', 185 km of overhead lines will be demolished, over 470 pylons removed and 300

hectares of land freed

Rome, 19 January 2022 - In 2021, the total number of new Terna projects authorised by the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition and by regional councils was 37, for a total value of over €1 billion in investments to develop the electricity grid.

This is a result that has never before been achieved in Terna's history, which confirms its key role as director and enabler of the energy transition towards achieving national and European climate objectives. The 2021 figure, achieved thanks to the constant collaboration and sharing between the company led by Stefano Donnarumma and the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition, saw strong acceleration in investments which have almost quadrupled compared to 2020, the year in which 23 projects, for a total value of €266 million, were authorised.

In addition to creating a positive impact on the efficiency and resilience of the national electricity grid and encouraging the development and distribution of energy produced from renewable sources, Terna's investments are a fundamental driving force for the growth of the country's economy: every billion invested in infrastructure generates between two and three in terms of GDP, also contributing to the creation of hundreds of jobs. The construction sites of the works authorised in 2021 will allow, in fact, to involve about 200 companies and more than 1,000 skilled workers and technicians throughout the country.

The environmental and landscape benefits are also significant: 60% of the nearly 500 km of new power lines authorised in 2021 will be 'invisible' because they are underground or undersea. The completion of all the projects will also make it possible to demolish 185 km of overhead lines and to remove a total of over 470 pylons. These activities will return more than 300 hectares of land to the territories and local communities.

Of the 37 authorisation decrees issued in 2021 (32 by the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition and 5 by regional councils), eight concern Sicily and involve almost half of the total value of the investments. Followed by Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Piedmont, with four authorised projects

for each region. In addition, six new electricity substations were authorised, two of them in Sicily, and one each in Campania, Lazio, Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige.

The most economically significant project authorised in 2021 will also be completed in Sicily. This is the "Chiaramonte Gulfi-Ciminna" power line, a line worth about €300 million, 172 km long, which will connect the two shores of Sicily, crossing through 6 provinces and 24 municipalities. Next, in order of investment value, the rationalisation of the electricity grid between Malcontenta and Fusina, in the province of Venice, for about €190 million and the new undersea connection for about €90 million that will link the Island of Elba to the Municipality of Piombino, in the province of Livorno.
