reducing its carbon footprint with a project submitted to the Science Based Targets Initiative

Rome, April 22, 2021 - On the occasion of World Earth Day, Terna launches its new CO2 reduction plan: by 2030, the company that manages the national electricity transmission grid is committed to cutting its polluting emissions by about 30% compared to 2019 levels, amounting to about 460,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent less per year in the atmosphere.

Consistent with its sustainability strategy and in line with the provisions of the Paris Agreement, Terna has adopted a Science-BasedTarget (SBT), making a concrete commitment to reduce emissions from its activities, for an ecological transition to a low-carbon economy. The actions that Terna has decided to implement in its "science-based" plan - presented with the support of the consulting firm Carbonsink - concern, specifically, the acceleration of investments for the development of the electricity grid in order to promote the full integration of renewable energy sources and reduce grid losses, activities for increasing the efficiency of electricity and energy consumption, the containment of leaks of climate-changing gases (SF6) used in some plants, the reduction of emissions from the company fleet and, in general, those related to employee mobility. In addition, the company has decided to initiate environmental protection and enhancement measures, including tree planting programmes in Italy in collaboration with AzzeroCO2, as well as a circular economy project aimed at 2030.

At present, only 10 Italian companies out of more than a thousand globally have signed an SBT with validated targets. The targets adopted by Terna, which are consistent with the scenario defined as "well below 2°C", i.e. in accordance with the guidelines recommended by scientists to keep the increase in global temperatures below specific limits, will be examined and assessed by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI). The institution, a collaboration between the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the WWF, certifies the commitment of companies to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and encourages ambitious action to combat climate change in the private sector in order to limit global temperature increases in line with the targets set by the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and with what is considered necessary on the basis of the latest scientific evidence on the environment.

The centrality of sustainability in business is embodied in the 2021-2025 Business Plan, in which Terna has earmarked € 8.9 billion in investments for the development and modernisation of the national electricity grid, the highest level ever planned by Terna for Italy, and of which, according to the criteria of the European Taxonomy, 95% are considered sustainable by their very nature. Through the definition of specific objectives, aimed at creating value in the medium-long term, Terna has defined targets divided into four dimensions - Human Resources; Stakeholders and Territory; Integrity, Responsibility and Transparency; Environment - and structured in 14 objectives to which more than 120 activities distributed over the entire time span of the Plan refer.

In the current pandemic crisis scenario, Terna has recently renewed its commitment to the 10 Principles of the Global Compact and the 17 UN SDGs in order to make an effective contribution to sustainable development and to strengthen its central role as director and enabler of the Italian energy system, the main entity capable of accompanying the country towards achieving the European objectives of "zero net emissions" by 2050. This commitment is also certified by confirmation, for the third year running, of its position as world leader in the Electric Utilities sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and recognition by SEAL (Sustainability, Environmental Achievement & Leadership) Business Sustainability Awards as one of the 50 most sustainable companies in the world. Terna's strategy continues with its commitment to increasingly minimise the visual and landscape impact of its electricity infrastructures through the use of innovative solutions and the removal of about 500 km of lines made obsolete by new grid development investments during the Plan period.
