Monthly demand was 31.1 billion kWh

TERNA: ELECTRICITY DEMAND GREW BY 2.2% IN JULY

Photovoltaics at record levels: production from solar energy covered approximately 36% of the

total generation from renewables for the month

Rome, 22 August 2022 - Electricity consumption in Italy continues to grow. In July, according to data from Terna - the Italian national transmission operator - Italy consumed a total of 31.1 billion kWh of electricity, an increase of 2.2% compared to the same month in 2021.

During the first seven months of 2022, electricity demand in Italy grew by 2.7% compared to the same period in 2021 (+1.8% adjusted value).

Specifically, July had one less working day (21 vs 22) and an average monthly temperature nearly 1.5°C higher than July 2021. The figure for electricity demand, adjusted for seasonal, calendar and temperature effects, remained stable (-0.2%). Nationally, the July 2022 trend was positive across the country: +1.6% in the North, +2.6% in Central Italy and +3.4% in the South and on the islands. In comparative terms, the figure for electricity demand in July, adjusted for seasonal, calendar and temperature effects, decreased slightly (-0.7%) compared to June.

In July 2022, 84.8% of electricity demand in Italy was met by national production and the remainder (15.2%) by the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. Net domestic production amounted to 26.6 billion kWh (+1,6%). Renewables accounted for 31.7% of Italian electricity demand. Thermal production (+12.1%) and photovoltaic production (+19.7%) grew, the latter reached record levels for the month of July (3.5 billion kWh) and was approximately 36% of the total generation from renewables. Hydroelectric production (-32.1%), wind production (-27.2%) and geothermal production (-3.4%) were down. Lastly, relative to the import/export balance, the change amounted to +7.8% with an increase in imports (+6.7%) and a decrease in exports (-14.3%).

Terna's IMCEI index, which considers the industrial consumption of energy-intensive companies, recorded a decrease of 12.3% compared to July 2021. Taking into consideration seasonal and calendar effects, the index shows a decrease of 8.1% compared to the previous month (June 2022). Change was positive only in the chemical segment.

A detailed analysis of provisional 2021 and 2022 monthly electricity demand is available in the publication "Monthly Report on the Electricity System", under the section "Electric System>>Dispatching>>Operating Data>>Monthly Report" at www.terna.it.
