Clubhouse is an audio-only chatting app where conversations happen in real time and now boasts 10 million weekly active users.

It's drawn in the likes of Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Oprah Winfrey as users.

The app was blocked in China in early February, after there was a surge in users discussing sensitive topics such as Xinjiang detention camps and Hong Kong independence.

Now, companies are vying to fill the void.

In the past month, at least a dozen similar apps have been launched in China, including an offering by Xiaomi.

Sources say ByteDance's plans are still in the early stages.

ByteDance declined to comment.

Any Clubhouse-like app in China is likely to face censorship and government oversight.
