Thales said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Edge, an advanced-technology group headquartered in Abu Dhabi, for the production and maintenance of advanced electro-optic systems.

The French aerospace-and-defense company said Wednesday that the agreement intends to strengthen the sovereign defense capabilities of the United Arab Emirates and localize key technologies through sustainable in-country industrial solutions.

Under the deal, the companies will explore the creation of dedicated capabilities in the U.A.E. for a range of Thales' optronics systems currently in operation with the country's armed forces.

The areas the companies intend to cooperate on include hand-held thermal imaging cameras, weapon sights and electro-optic vehicular cameras.
