The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) held its 160th Anniversary Celebration today, with Mr John Lee Ka-chiu, the Chief Executive of HKSAR, as the officiating guest.

Mr Lee was joined by the representatives of Towngas, including Dr Lee Ka-kit and Dr Lee Ka-shing, the Joint Chairmen, Dr Colin Lam Ko-yin, the Non-executive Director, Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, the Managing Director, and Mr John Ho Hon-ming, the Executive Director, Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary, in kicking off the Celebration.

The event brought a number of political and business heavyweights together to celebrate Towngas' 160 years of service in Hong Kong. In his speech, Mr John Lee Ka-chiu praised Towngas for its 160 years of service in providing safe and quality gas services to the people of Hong Kong, 'Towngas is one of the participating organisations in our Carbon Neutral Partnership. By actively setting carbon reduction targets and timetables and taking the lead in deepening and accelerating low-carbon transformation, Towngas serves as a role model for the community. Towngas has been utilising landfill gas in gas production since 1999 and has recently launched the first landfill-gas-driven Combined Heat and Power Generating System in Hong Kong with Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. Starting in 2006, Towngas also introduced natural gas as a feedstock for gas production, bringing a cleaner energy source to our city.' Mr Lee added, 'In addition to gas supply, Towngas also makes a contribution to green transportation by actively studying the extraction of a certain amount of hydrogen from the gas mix, fueling the hydrogen fuel cell bus pilot project for local bus companies, offering a safe and efficient energy option for green transportation in Hong Kong.

Rooted in Hong Kong, Towngas also cares about the development of our country. The Company operates Towngas Smart Energy on the Chinese mainland to deliver energy services to various cities, and is engaged in launching photovoltaic and energy storage projects to promote the country's green and low-carbon transformation.' At the end of his speech, Mr Lee expressed his good wishes and high hopes for Towngas, 'I wish Towngas every success in its business, and hope that you will continue to contribute to the long-term development, prosperity and stability of Hong Kong from the energy sector.' Dr Lee Ka-shing, the Chairman of Towngas, said, 'In 1862, Towngas opened its doors with only GBP35,000 of capital. And now, in addition to providing safe and high-quality gas services to 2 million customers in Hong Kong, we have acquired more than 550 projects in 28 provincial regions on the Chinese mainland, with over 40 million customers. Our business scope covers natural gas, green energy, smart energy, water supply and municipal waste treatment, making us the leading group in the Greater China energy industry.' Expressing his gratitude, Dr Lee Ka-kit, the Chairman of Towngas, said, 'The Group will actively respond to the HKSAR Government's 'Climate Action Plan 2050' decarbonisation strategy and the country's '30-60 dual carbon' goals.

Towngas has pioneered the use of landfill gas for waste-to-energy conversion and natural gas as a raw material for gas production in the early years. Today, we are actively exploring the feasibility of extracting hydrogen, which accounts for 49% of our gas mix, to provide Hong Kong with safe, efficient and low-cost hydrogen energy with our over 3,600 km of gas pipelines throughout the city, contributing to our target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.' At the same time, Dr Lee Ka-kit announced that the second edition of the TERAAward Smart Energy Innovation Competition, jointly organised by Towngas and State Power Investment Company Limited, is officially launched and open for registration until 31 October 2022. The inaugural competition was a great success, with 208 project submissions from 23 countries and regions received, fully reflecting the trend of zero-carbon technology innovation. This year, Towngas will carry on from last year's theme of 'Exploring Zero-Carbon Innovations for the Future', focusing on five new scopes and identifying more innovative technologies and solutions from the global smart energy field, with an aim to promote the realisation of the country's 'dual carbon' goals and sustainable development
