荃灣眾安街沙井蓋彈起事件 Towngas and The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf presented Social Harmony - Cooking Contest First Ever cooking contest in Hong Kong of the hearing impaired and hearing person

(13 June 2016) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) held the first "Social Harmony - Cooking Contest" in Hong Kong (12 June) in collaboration with The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf (HKSOD), to pass on the message of the importance of communication among family members and promote social integration of hearing impaired and hearing persons.

Towngas volunteers first briefly introduced the activities and then started to play warm-up games with hearing impaired participants. Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer - Utilities Business of Towngas, Peter Wong and Director of The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, Winnie Wong were invited to the stage to officiate the kick-off ceremony of the event.

Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer - Utilities Business of Towngas, Peter Wong said, "Towngas is dedicated to practicing our social responsibility and taking care of the needs of social vulnerable groups. Recently, we hire disabled persons and provide accessible facilities. I deeply believe that disabled persons possess unique skills and abilities. In collaboration with HKSOD, not only we give blessings to family members, but also pass on the message of the importance of equality of people with and without disabilities. Provided with suitable positions, disabled persons are still be able to bring their talents into full play."

Director of The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, Winnie Wong also expressed her support to the activity. She believes that hearing and hearing impaired persons are able to communicate normally and work closely together if they are provided with sufficient training.

The theme of the cooking contest was "To My Dearest Parents / Kids". There were altogether 16 teams participating in the event, consisting of hearing impaired parents / teenagers with Towngas volunteers. Basic ingredients were provided and each team was given 45 minutes to prepare and name their own dish. The team members were also required to interact with their partners using sign language and other possible communication methods. The judge panel then selected one champion, first runner-up and second runner-up, and also "Perfect Teamwork Award", "Most Creative Award" and "The Warmest Team Award". During the competition, each team not only showed strong connection with team members but also exhibited the importance of collaboration. All the teams successfully created delicious dishes and shared their DIY food with their family members right after the contest. The contest ended up being a fun and heartwarming experience for all participants.

Towngas has always been emphasising on ethical and responsible business practices. Recently, disabled persons are hired to handle different job duties in various departments in the company. Believing that disabled persons also possess unique skills and ability, such as strong concentration and good work attitude, Towngas will provide disabled staff a more comprehensive training so as to bring their talent into full play.
