In total, about 60 million people across Ethiopia lack access to clean and safe water. Water is especially limited in rural Ethiopia, where 80% of the population resides, and is typically unsafe whenever it is available.

In continued commitment to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #6, IPG funded a new spring protection program in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. The spring protection system is a part of a larger water project that also constructed 83 water wells, led by Organization for Relief and Development in Amhara (ORDA) and charity:water. In total, the project will provide 28,994 people with clean and safe drinking water.

Spring protection systems are integral in limiting insect and waterborne disease from freshwater springs. The systems capture clean water as it emerges from the ground and channels it to community tap stands, allowing the communities to safely drink from naturally occurring springs.

charity:water relies on local implementing partners like ORDA for long-term community change and to build on existing progress. Currently, ORDA is working on forming a committee of democratically elected community members to manage each community water point to ensure its successful, long-term operation. ORDA is also developing latrine and handwashing stations, piloting community-led sanitation and hygiene sessions, offering menstrual hygiene management lessons at schools, and more.

Access to clean water is a basic human right that promotes health, education, growth, and gender equality. For more information on the water crisis, read here.
