New York Times : Lyndsey Layton Named Deputy Climate Editor

03/24/2021 | 06:31am EDT

I'm thrilled to announce that Lyndsey Layton, a longtime editor and reporter at The Washington Post, will be the new deputy editor for policy on the Climate desk.

Lyndsey was most recently the deputy editor on the climate and environment team at The Post. In that position, she has overseen much of the daily report, handled breaking news and led Climate Solutions, a powerful visual series.

Before moving to that team, Lyndsey was a metro politics editor. She oversaw state, congressional and U.S. Senate races, handling simultaneous scandals in 2019 involving Virginia's governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. She also directed coverage of District politics, including the corruption investigation into the city's longest serving lawmaker that led to his resignation. She shaped stories about the city's response to gentrification, homelessness and health care crises, including the mismanagement of the city's only public hospital and a searing multimedia project that revealed one of the nation's most severe rates of fatal opioid overdoses, because of tainted heroin.

Before she became an editor, Lyndsey covered education, Congress and the Food and Drug Administration for The Posts's national desk. And for its metro desk, she also covered gentrification and public transportation, and her investigation into the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority led to the resignation of its general manager.

She began her journalism career in high school, covering city council meetings for the local weekly. A graduate of Wesleyan University, Lyndsey lives in Washington with her husband.

She'll remain based in Washington. Please welcome her.

- Hannah
