Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. will invest $140 million to expand its production of consumable plastic products to respond to global demand for Covid-19 testing, treatment and vaccine needs, the company said Tuesday.

The plan will create 1,000 jobs, increase automation, and optimize warehouse and sterilization capacity, Thermo Fisher said. The expansion will take place at the company's sites in Rochester, N.Y.; Petaluma, Calif.; Monterrey and Tijuana, Mexico; and Joensuu, Finland.

The company's plastic products include beakers, pipettes and diagnostic plates.
