On March 19, 2022, the India-Japan Economic Forum: 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of Japan-India Diplomatic Relations, hosted by the Japan External Trade Organization and the Confederation of Indian Industry, was held in New Delhi. Toray was invited as a company with business bases in India, and Shigekazu Suenaga, Toray's chief representative for India, attended the event.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the forum, and discussions were held on the global strategic partnership between the two countries. Suenaga introduced Toray's initiatives in India.
In the Toray Group Sustainability Vision formulated in 2018, Toray declared its aspiration to realize a world that completely offsets greenhouse gas emissions through absorption by 2050 by leveraging the power of excellent advanced materials. It aims to achieve its carbon neutrality while contributing to the sustainable development of society by solving global environmental problems as well as resource and energy issues. To realize carbon neutrality of the society as a whole, it is important to utilize green hydrogen in non-electric power sector along with increasing the use of renewable energy, and the key is manufacture of green hydrogen using water electrolysis.
Speaking at the event, Suenaga explained that Toray has been developing water electrolysis technology using its proprietary hydrocarbon-based polymer electrolyte membranes, which will dramatically improve efficiency and contribute to significant reduction in hydrogen costs, and that it aims to build a global supply chain for manufacturing green hydrogen with Japanese and Indian partners in the country. He explained Toray's intention to contribute to the achievement of carbon neutrality with the power of its advanced materials.
