Briarpatch Pediatrics: Integrating Mind and Body

By Kelly Favilleon Mon, Jan 24, 2022

Total Brain works with a vast array of progressive healthcare providers nationwide. Whether caring for children and adolescents diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or providing therapies for individuals suffering from addiction, anxiety and/or depression, each of our provider clients leverages the power of the Total Brain platform to make data-informed treatment decisions that drive verifiable mental health improvements.

We had an opportunity to sit down with Dr. Leif Norenberg, a Total Brain client for nearly two years, to talk to him about his experience using Total Brain and its impact on patients, families and staff. Dr. Norenberg is a physician owner at Briarpatch Pediatrics, a large, innovative pediatric practice employing six physicians, three nurse practitioners and two behavioral health professionals.

Dr. Norenberg and his team care for a patient population of more than 6,000 children and adolescents ranging in age from birth to age 19. At the heart of their practice is the desire to ensure that their patients have the best quality of life possible. And for these forward-thinking healthcare providers, that means making mental wellness as important as physical wellness.

Two years ago, technology played little role in Briarpatch Pediatrics' behavioral healthcare program. Since integrating Total Brain into their practice, Dr. Norenberg tells us that the ability to monitor and care for patients in between office visits is transformative.

According to Dr. Norenberg, "Even before the pandemic, we were looking for ways to improve our mental health services. We knew that digital tools were being used for treatment of addiction, but we had no idea that this technology was also being used for anxiety, stress and ADHD. This was exciting news. Total Brain really opened our eyes. We were thrilled to be able to add to our already robust behavioral health options.

"The 20 to 30 minutes I spend with my patients in the office is important; however, it is the care that I can provide between office visits that is far more critical," said Dr Norenberg. "Total Brain enables me to give my patients the tools and resources they need to care for themselves. At the same time, I am behind the scenes monitoring their progress and looking for any red flags that may need to be addressed. It is truly game changing.

"While results can vary from patient to patient, for many of my young patients, Total Brain has proven to be incredibly helpful."

When asked what he wants his colleagues in the healthcare provider sector to take away from his experience working with the Total Brain platform, Dr. Norenberg reinforced three key points:

  • Objective patient assessments are critical to making a skillful diagnosis. Total Brain removes the subjectivity inherent in one-on-one dialogue between patient and doctor.
  • If you can't measure it, you can't manage it. Total Brain enables patient and doctor to track progress and tweak treatment based on results. The ability to tangibly measure progress also gives patients hope and improves self-esteem.
  • A one size fits all approach to mental healthcare doesn't work. Total Brain is just one more treatment option to offer patients. I believe that the more options we can offer our patients the better the outcomes.
