The chief executive of French energy giant Total SE reached an agreement Monday with the president of the Republic of Congo to continue exploring for crude oil in the Central African nation over the next 20 years.

"We agreed to renew our concession on the Djeno block," Patrick Pouyanne told reporters after the deal that was struck at Oyo, President Denis Sassou Nguesso's hometown, some 400 kilometers from the capital Brazzaville.

Financial details of the contact were not released, but the Total CEO said the oil block will be jointly explored by Total and partners Franco-English Perenco and Italy's Eni.
