Transurban : Heathwood Community Centre to create hub for local residents

The Heathwood Community Centre has been shaped by community feedback and once constructed will transform a 6,500m² parcel of vacant land located along the Logan Motorway at the Stapylton Road interchange in Heathwood into an inclusive meeting space for the local community.

The centre's concept design incorporates a flexible floorplan to facilitate a range of activities, catering for small groups to large functions of up to 125 people, and features a large undercover outdoor breakout space, a commercial kitchen and a wet room for activities such as pottery and painting.

Construction of the Heathwood Community Centre is expected to commence later this year and will be open for public use by mid 2019.

Transurban Queensland Group Executive Sue Johnson said she was proud to announce the Heathwood Community Centre which will provide a lasting legacy for the community as a result of the Logan Enhancement Project.

'The Heathwood Community Centre is the first roadside regeneration project for Transurban Queensland and has been designed to provide long-term benefits for local residents by addressing specific community needs,' Ms Johnson said.

'We are excited to be giving back to the community and have engaged not for profit organisation Communify to manage the centre once constructed. Communify have a strong history of managing community venues across Brisbane and are best equipped to ensure the centre supports the requirements of the local community.

'As part of our commitment to sustainability we are investigating ways to improve the environmental outcomes of the centre, such as how solar and water capture can be incorporated into the centre's design.'

Member for Algester Leeanne Enoch said the Heathwood Community Centre is a significant outcome for the local area.

'Lack of community meeting spaces has been an issue raised with me regularly by residents. The importance of addressing this was made clear during the consultation phase of this project,' Ms Enoch said.

'I am pleased to be part of the group helping shape the delivery of this project, which is ensuring the best possible outcomes for our community.

'The team at Transurban have done a wonderful job in progressing this development through the planning and community consultation stages, and I look forward to seeing the Heathwood Community Centre come to life.'

Communify CEO Karen Dare said her organisation is delighted to be working with Transurban Queensland on such a critical initiative.

'We are thrilled to have been appointed to manage the Heathwood Community Centre and to be engaged from such an early stage. It's a fantastic opportunity to work with Transurban Queensland to design a community space which addresses the needs of local residents,' Ms Dare said.

'We look forward to expanding our reach to Brisbane's south to manage a space that will be home to a variety of classes, events, community groups and support services to benefit the local region.'

The Heathwood Community Centre is currently in detailed design phase and is subject to overall government approval of the centre.
