Travis Perkins plc, a leading partner to the construction industry and the UK's largest distributor of building materials, is investing in Northampton as part of its continued commitment to the local area. This includes refurbishment of its head office building to pave the way for the hybrid ways of working that the company has adopted post the COVID-19 pandemic.

The refurbishment of what is now referred to as The Hub (also known as Ryehill House) supports over 700 colleagues, including most of the Group's support function employees, and provides a bright and modern workspace.

Individual offices, corridors and filing cupboards have been replaced with an open plan workspace with bookshelves and green walls, which give a 'home from home' feel. There is a range of working areas, including hot desks, breakout areas, meeting rooms and booths, which enable colleagues to work individually or together in the way that suits them best.

As part of the Travis Perkins decarbonisation roadmap, the Group's sustainability and property teams have also achieved a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of the building by considering everything from lighting, to heating and cooling and the trial of recycled paint for the walls. The building benefits from a move to a 100% renewable electricity tariff and investment in energy efficiency solutions, such as LED lighting, the installation of solar panels and electric vehicle charging points. Measures have also been put in place to optimise recycling and make this a paperless office.

"During the COVID-19 pandemic we adapted our ways of working to remain open so our branches could provide essential building materials and supplies to the construction sector to keep people dry, warm, safe and secure. Meanwhile, our colleagues in non-customer facing roles worked remotely from home. This gave us a unique opportunity to trial remote working and utilise technology in a more effective way. We made huge strides in flexible working and proved that we can work smarter and give colleagues the opportunity to strike a better balance between their work and home lives.

"Based on this trial and colleague feedback, we have now created a hybrid working model that is designed to provide the right work environment for our colleagues to be at their best. As a result, most support function colleagues now split their working week between home and office working in The Hub. This has allowed us to modernise the way we work and to attract a more diverse range of talents and skills, something which is key in order for us to build our capability for the future," explained Chief HR Officer, Emma Rose.

Travis Perkins plc, which dates back over 200 years and first came to Northampton in 1904, has had a presence on the Lodge Way Estate since 1980. As part of the transformation of its presence there, the company recently commenced demolition of Lodge Way House, the company's previous head office on site. This is due to be completed in June 2022, and all demolition materials will be recycled.
