UGL joint venture to deliver $127 million Nutrient Removal Plant for Melbourne Water

Sydney: UGL Limited (ASX: UGL) today announced that as part of a joint venture with CPB Contractors it has signed a $127million (UGL share $63.5million) contract with Melbourne Water for delivery of a 140ML per day Nutrient Removal Plant (NRP) at Melbourne Water's Western Treatment Plant. The joint venture will design and construct the plant, with design supported by subcontract design consultant Jacobs.

Three short listed consortia participated in Melbourne Water's two phase procurement process for the Western Treatment Plant Treatment Capacity Increase Project.

Phase 1 included a pilot trial at the Western Treatment Plant site to support the development of each tenderer's unique process solution. At the conclusion of Phase 1, all three consortia were invited to tender Phase 2 of the works, the design and construction of the full scale plant based upon their respective Phase 1 Preliminary Designs.

The scope of the project awarded to the CPB UGL JV includes the design and construction of:

  • an influent system to draw influent from the 55E Lagoon system

  • a Nutrient Removal Plant

  • an effluent discharge system to return treated effluent downstream.

Design is expected to commence in November 2016 with commissioning complete by the end of the 2018 calendar year. Once commissioned, the joint venture will undertake operations and maintenance of the plant for a period of up to two years to the end of 2020.

Melbourne Water manages Melbourne's water supply catchments, treats and supplies drinking and recycled water, removes and treats most of Melbourne's sewage, and manages waterways and major drainage systems in the Port Phillip and Westernport region.

UGL CEO Ross Taylor said "UGL is pleased to continue a long standing relationship with Melbourne Water, having participated in the delivery of over $1 billion in Melbourne Water projects over the past decade. Using an innovative extension to a proven design we look forward to providing Melbourne Water with a cost effective and reliable solution to meet their need for future growth in capacity.

"This is an important win for UGL providing a solid foundation to pursue upcoming opportunities in the greater Melbourne area in the next two years."
