We spoke with Paul Williamson, president of Colorado region about how his longstanding commitment to UMB Bank and dedication to community service earned him a spot on Denver Business Journal's 40 under 40 list.

What is your history with UMB Bank and what is your current role?

I joined UMB in 2004 as part of the company's management and leadership program and have served in multiple roles over the past 17 years. In 2016, I was named the president of UMB Bank's Colorado region where I'm responsible for strategic development and growth while also leading the commercial banking team, wealth management and retail operations for the region.

What is your proudest accomplishment from the past year?

So much of our world in banking and finance is relationship-based. We are always out talking to our current customers, meeting new ones and being part of the community. I am incredibly proud of how our team has adjusted to changing environments and how they have found new, creative ways to build and maintain their relationships.

Another moment I will never forget was our ability to help more than 1,000 local businesses stay afloat by helping them secure Paycheck Protection Program loans. This work helped businesses keep their doors open and retain their employees during one of the hardest times our country has ever had to face.

What is a skill you developed that didn't come naturally?

Leading a team of nearly 30 people was a skill I had to nurture and one that I consistently work to improve upon. For a long time, I operated as a commercial banking officer, so I was accustomed to expanding my network, building relationships and growing my own career. Now, I get the chance to help others do that, which has been a really rewarding experience that I hope to continue for a long time.

What is a skill you pride yourself on and have passed on to your kids?

I have never had a real sense of fear my whole life. I have always been ready to jump into anything headfirst and learn as I go. As my 5-year-old son grows up, I see the same characteristic in him, which is pretty fun (and at times terrifying) to watch.

How do you give back to the community in Denver?

I am actively involved in three organizations that focus on the importance of education and financial literacy, including the Access College Early Scholarships, Junior Achievement Rocky Mountain and Metropolitan State University of Denver. Each works to advance the education of young people through various means, and I am incredibly grateful to help in those efforts. I also volunteer with the Denver Botanic Gardens, which is one of Denver's greatest cultural assets.
