Freight railroad operator Union Pacific said it was halting cargo transit at Eagle Pass, after the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency closed train traffic there Wednesday due to the migrant situation.

The bridge is one of several key rail links between the U.S. and Mexico, used by both Union Pacific and rival BNSF. Trains transport billions of dollars worth of automobiles and automobile parts, apparel, beverages, fuel and grain through the Eagle Pass bridge every year.

Union Pacific said its other border gateways, including its terminal at Laredo, Texas, continue normal operations but cannot handle the extra traffic.
