CHICAGO (AP) _ United Airlines Holdings Inc. (UAL) on Wednesday reported a loss of $646 million in its fourth quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Chicago-based company said it had a loss of $1.99. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $1.60 per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 18 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of $2.23 per share.

The airline posted revenue of $8.19 billion in the period, also beating Street forecasts. Seventeen analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $7.93 billion.
