United Parcel Service Inc. has agreed to buy Roadie, a platform that connects consumers with local drivers who can make same-day deliveries.

UPS declined to disclose the terms of the transaction.

Roadie has a network of crowdsourced drivers who use their own vehicles to complete delivery requests. Roadie will complement UPS's delivery network because it can provide same-day delivery of perishable items and because its drivers can transport items that are not traditionally packed, UPS said.

Roadie will continue to operate under its own name. Goods transported by Roadie will not cross into the UPS network, and goods shipped via UPS will not enter the Roadie network, UPS said.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.
