PITTSBURGH (AP) _ United States Steel Corp. (X) on Thursday reported fourth-quarter net income of $49 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

The Pittsburgh-based company said it had net income of 22 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were 27 cents per share.

The steel maker posted revenue of $2.56 billion in the period.

For the year, the company reported that its loss widened to $1.17 billion, or $5.92 per share. Revenue was reported as $9.74 billion.

U.S. Steel shares have increased 12% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has increased nearly 1%. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $18.73, more than doubling in the last 12 months.
