UnitedHealth Group shares slid after reports that the brutal killing of insurance unit chief executive Brian Thompson may have been inspired by critiques of the health-insurance industry's coverage practices.

In one response to an apparent backlash, Elevance Health's Anthem reversed a decision to change limits on reimbursing customers for the cost of anesthesia in several states following opposition from a medical group.
