Our Meet the Hiring Manager series lets you get to know the people who grow teams at VMware. You'll learn about our hiring managers' career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. In this feature, we'd like you to meet Virgilia Casaburi.

  • Job title: Commercial Manager DSC CEMEA
  • Years at VMware: 2 years and eight months
  • First job: My first "paying" job was as a waitress in my aunt's restaurant when I was 16. The most important thing was to sell precisely what dish the chef told me to push on that particular day. Every dish I managed to sell gave me great satisfaction!
  • Fun fact: A funny thing about me is that even though I'm 100% Italian and I've only lived in Berlin for seven years, I have a strong German accent even when I speak English.
  • Favorite social distancing activity: I love to do Yoga and cook Italian dishes. During the pandemic, I took part in several online yoga and cooking courses, where I met many people who share my passions, some of whom I'm still friends with today!

VMware Careers: Tell us about your career journey to date?

Virgilia: I started my career in the airport, starting as a ramp agent to the control tower managing the various onboard operations. When I arrived in Barcelona four years ago, my passion for technology, innovation, and sales began. I realised I had a natural potential in this field and started attending different courses to update myself on the subject. Then I came across VMware! My journey at VMware began as an individual contributor working in business development for many of the acquired products of the management suite. After a while, I moved to a sales development role focusing on the DACH market and contributing to the territory's success. Then, five months ago, I started a new adventure and moved to a management role, leading my team to success. I am a lover of challenges and like to contribute to people's development, support them and lead them to success. I believe these were the characteristics VMware invested in to realise my potential.

VMware Careers: How is VMware different from any other tech company you have previously worked for?

Virgilia: VMware's culture combines everything millennials or Gen Z value in an employer: innovation, respect, trust, autonomy, collaboration, diversity and inclusion, flexibility, community focus, and environmental care, all backed by passion and execution. I also have to say that it is a company that invests heavily in people and their development, and I am proof of that.

VMware Careers: What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Virgilia: It is the opportunity to work on challenging problems. I also thrive on helping my team succeed and love the sense of belonging and responsibility I get from my role. In addition, I always look forward to seeing the faces of my colleagues at work.

VMware Careers: What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you moved upwards in your career?

Virgilia: "Teamwork is the secret that makes ordinary people achieve extraordinary results" - Ifeanyi Enoch Onuoha

As a leader, I believe my success depends on my team's success. We will only all succeed if they have the confidence, motivation, and freedom to explore their own interests and beliefs and make them available to the team to perform as a unit. Therefore, VMware gives me the freedom to make decisions that allow my team and individuals to develop their strengths.

VMware Careers: What makes the team you lead so effective?

Virgilia: In my team, everyone is responsible for actively participating in the various problems we face. For example, we had noticed some knowledge gaps that our team had when developing people into their role. My team brought ideas to the table without being asked and took the initiative to add missing information to facilitate people coming in later. I am proud to say that we have a very generous, knowledge-sharing approach on our team.

VMware Careers: If someone reading this was coming to interview with you tomorrow, what interview tips would you give them?

Virgilia: Drop your fears and bring sincerity to the interview. We are looking for people with the right attitude who want to learn and have a true team spirit and proactive mindset. It is essential to allow employees to take the initiative on projects or strategic goals to encourage professional development and continuous knowledge sharing within the team. Skills can be taught, but attitude can't! I'd rather develop someone with grit, determination & hunger to learn than hire someone with the skills but not the passion. If you genuinely want to learn and contribute to your tech community, then you are in the right place.
