Voestalpine : The two-million-screw warehouse

11/24/2021 | 04:30am EST

High bay warehousing experts voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik used state-of-the-art logistics solutions to build the new distribution center in Ecser, Hungary, for international retail chain JYSK. The Austrian experts are assisting JYSK in its efforts to supply businesses and companies in Central Europe with faster and more efficient deliveries with this, its largest high bay warehouse project to date.

Online and retail business depend on ever denser and more efficient delivery networks. The high bay warehouses at their center are the core elements in modern logistics, making specialists such as voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik GmbH sought-after partners for the construction of hubs and sales centers used in international trade. And they are getting larger: the parts list for the high bay warehouse at the JYSK Group's newest hub, in Ecser, Hungary, included two million screws.

The new JYSK hub helps eliminate 4.5 million kilometers of driving annually.

Investment in warehousing space

The impressive size of its latest logistics center is another step towards realizing the Danish Group's strategic principle of always working seamlessly with, and in close proximity to, the customer. The JYSK range of products for 'Scandinavian sleeping and living' is attracting growing numbers of customers in 50 countries worldwide. Customers are served via a network of over 3,000 outlets, and this number is expected to grow. As a result, the Danish retail group decided to continue investing in its future, most recently with the construction of the Ecser logistics center close to Budapest airport. This central location offers JYSK a major advantage for deliveries to its customers in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia Herzegovina.

The two warehouses which form the core of the new distribution center are constructed by voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik GmbH. Measuring 43 meters in height, they will remain two clear landmarks until the start of operations in 2022.

Optimal Solutions

The twin high bay warehouses in Ecser will provide space for around 210,000 pallets. "For voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik, every new high bay warehouse is different, giving us the chance to apply our construction know-how and logistics experience," says voestalpine project head Matthias Fitz. This is the fifth high bay warehousing project that the Lower Austrian specialists have realized for this customer. Fitz explains that, "Our excellent performance in constructing the Bulgarian JYSK warehouse, for example, and the way that JYSK and our sales team work as partners, was the reason the customer once again came directly to us carry out this project."

Björn Nilsson, Project Manager Logistics at JYSK Nordic, confirms this view: "Seamless logistics are a key prerequisite for fulfilling our mission statement of being able to give our customers the best possible offers, now and in the future. voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik is a reliable partner and shares our commitment to precision and punctuality."

Successful stages

New projects often bring surprising tasks. In Ecser, for example, a special solution was needed for attaching the exterior panels to the rack construction. By applying a novel solution, the voestalpine construction engineers were able to meet this challenge to the client's full satisfaction.

The Lower Austrian high bay warehousing specialists' logistics management capabilities were equally outstanding, Matthias Fitz reports: "Almost 10,000 tons of steel, including over 200,000 running meters of vertical members and two million screws, had to be brought to the construction site at the right time to build the warehouses." Björn Nilsson of JYSK Nordic was impressed by their flexibility: "The use of interim storage made it possible to quickly react to potential, short-term changes in the construction schedule. That's something that we, as the customer, appreciate."

2 million screws needed: the new JYSK high bay warehouse in Ecser realized by voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik.

New standards in logistics

The new distribution center in Ecser will significantly improve JYSK's deliveries to businesses and customers in Central Europe. The increased efficiency of deliveries and supplies is also made possible through excellent cooperation with companies such as voestalpine Krems Finaltechnik. "Our current JYSK project in Hungary is a further milestone in this cooperation which has set new standards, especially in the field of logistics," concludes Matthias Fitz.
