HANNOVER (dpa-AFX) - According to Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil, Volkswagen must continue to work on securing a future for its plant in Osnabrück. "The Osnabrück site is very small by Volkswagen standards. That is a problem, but it does not release Volkswagen from its obligation to plan the future of this plant in a responsible manner," said the SPD politician, who has also been a member of the VW supervisory board since 2013.
"The collective agreement has found a clever solution, which translates as: we will take another very close look at whether there are internal options for securing the future of the VW site in Osnabrück, or whether external uses for this plant and the skills of its workforce are an option," said Weil. "Both are happening, and that is right and necessary." The state government had attached great importance to this passage.
At the end of April, Volkswagen rejected reports that a decision had already been made to end vehicle production in Osnabrück. "We are still examining various options. This always involves considering and evaluating the economic viability," a company spokesperson said at the time./cwe/DP/zb
