BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Vulcan Materials Co. (VMC) on Tuesday reported second-quarter net income of $209.9 million.

The Birmingham, Alabama-based company said it had profit of $1.58 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and to account for discontinued operations, came to $1.60 per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.38 per share.

The construction materials company posted revenue of $1.32 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.31 billion.

Vulcan shares have dropped 18% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed 2%. The stock has decreased 14% in the last 12 months.
