GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) _ W.R. Berkley Corp. (WRB) on Thursday reported second-quarter earnings of $237.2 million.

On a per-share basis, the Greenwich, Connecticut-based company said it had profit of $1.27. Earnings, adjusted for investment gains, came to $1.17 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 96 cents per share.

The insurance company posted revenue of $2.3 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $2.16 billion.

W.R. Berkley shares have climbed 13% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $75.21, an increase of 18% in the last 12 months.
