Webjet enables travellers to take action on climate change with carbon offset program

Melbourne, 7 September 2020: Webjet is pleased to announce the launch of its carbon offset program, Sustainable Traveller, which enables customers to take action on climate change by offsetting their flights when booking.

From today, Webjet customers will be offered the option to offset the carbon emissions of their flight by making a financial contribution to verified environmental projects. These contributions will directly support projects that protect ancient rainforests in Peru, strengthen renewable energy work in Asia, and fund smoke-free kitchens through the distribution of efficient cookstoves in Malawi.

CEO of Webjet OTA David Galt says Webjet was responding to the powerful customer sentiment for action on climate change.

"Customers are increasingly demanding more sustainable travel options, and through Sustainable Traveller we now offer Webjet customers the ability to contribute to efforts that work to balance out the carbon footprint of their travels. As an online business, our impact on the environment is relatively limited, but we have a responsibility to promote sustainable travel where possible and help protect the destinations, landscapes and habitats our customers love to visit."

The program is being delivered in partnership with Tasman Environmental Markets (TEM), Australia's largest carbon offset provider. TEM is providing Webjet with its BlueHalo technology, which calculates the CO2 emissions of a customer's travel itinerary.

"As a service, the BlueHalo software seamlessly integrates into the Webjet booking path and directs contributions to a portfolio of verified carbon offset programs that benefit communities and environments around the world.

When choosing a carbon offset partner, we examined the sophistication of the BlueHalo offset technology and the integrity of the offset projects to ensure we would provide our customers with a premium offset experience that makes real impact. TEM continues to deliver on all counts."

Peter Castellas, TEM CEO, believes customers will respond positively to the initiative to make travel more carbon neutral.

"Through the partnership with Webjet and the deployment of BlueHalo, we are empowering consumers to join a growing global community of people taking action on climate change. The tourism industry is at the forefront of climate change impact, and travellers are increasingly choosing to reduce their carbon footprint by offsetting their emissions."

Castellas said TEM's internationally-verified environmental projects are delivering life-changing benefits to those impacted most by climate change.

"Sustainable Traveller is supporting projects that include delivering climate resilience to families around the world who depend on natural resources for their livelihoods, especially women and children. We're excited about working with a powerful Australian brand and making powerful impacts to people and the planet."
