Key takeaways

  • Tata Group in India acquires iPhone and MacBook repair services from Wistron in Taiwan.
  • Apple sells about 11 million iPhones in India, giving it a 7 percent market share.
  • The partnership could pave the way for Apple to sell refurbished devices directly in India.

Apple is further expanding its partnership with Tata Group in India, Reuters reports. This includes Tata Group taking over repair services for iPhones and MacBooks previously performed by Wistron of Taiwan. The shift reflects Apple's growing reliance on Tata Group as a key supplier within the supply chain, especially as the tech giant diversifies production outside of China.

The repair market is also poised for significant growth in India, the world's second-largest smartphone market. Indeed, Apple sales are on the rise there. Counterpoint Research estimates that about 11 million iPhones were sold last year. That accounts for a 7 percent market share compared with just 1 percent in 2020. This trend underscores Apple's growing confidence in Tata Group's capabilities.

Tata Group

Tata Group already plays an important role in assembling iPhones for both domestic and international markets at three factories in southern India. One of these factories also produces certain iPhone parts. While official Apple service centers throughout India will handle basic repairs, more complex problems will be handled at Tata's iPhone campus in Karnataka.

Experts suggest that this intensified collaboration could pave the way for Apple to sell refurbished devices directly in India, along the lines of current practices in the United States.
