WIZZ AIR yesterday said it carried a staggering 3.62m passengers in April - a 542 per cent increase on last year.

For the week ending 2 May, the airline reported an average of 722 flights per day, ranking seventh in Europe's top 10 aircraft operators.

Wizz Air beat legacy carriers such as British Airways, which came in eighth with an average of 674 flights per day. The carrier's strong performance came after it had snapped up two additional daily slots from Vueling at London Luton airport, cementing its confidence in the travel sector's recovery.

Wizz said the added positions will increase frequencies on existing routes, reinforcing Wizz's role as the hub's largest operator at the hub.

According to aviation analyst Sally Gethin, Wizz has cemented its predominance in the market ever since the pandemic, as it "pursued an aggressive expansion strategy while all other major airlines had grounded their fleets".
