Chinese carmaker XPeng is teaming up with Volkswagen to build what the companies say will be one of the largest super-fast charging networks for electric vehicles in China.

The companies said in a statement Monday that they will jointly build more than 20,000 charging piles in 420 cities in China.

The high-power, liquid-cooled super-fast charging piles will be made available to both XPeng and Volkswagen customers.

The collaboration could be extended to co-branded super-fast charging stations in China, XPeng said in the statement.

The move signals a deepening of the existing partnership between the two automakers.

XPeng's earnings got a boost last year from robust revenue from its technical collaboration with Volkswagen, sending the Chinese company's gross profit margin into the double digits in each of the first three quarters of 2024.

XPeng's Hong Kong-listed shares were up 2.9% in early trade.
