RYE BROOK, N.Y. (AP) _ Xylem Inc. (XYL) on Thursday reported third-quarter earnings of $37 million.

On a per-share basis, the Rye Brook, New York-based company said it had profit of 20 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 62 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 52 cents per share.

The water and wastewater treatment company posted revenue of $1.22 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.17 billion.

Xylem shares have risen 11% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen 1%. The stock has increased 4% in the last 12 months.
